1. GENERAL MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM OF THE CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT

General provisions

The Department of Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will offer a reformed Master’s Degree program in Chemistry from the Academic Year 2014-2015 in accordance with the provisions of this decision and the provisions of Law 3685/2008 (FEK 148 A.) as amended and in force.

Subject – Program Purpose

The subject of the Master’s Degree programs  is determined by the cognitive areas of Chemistry and the Applications of Chemistry in Current Technology.

The purpose of the program is:

  1. To provide knowledge to Master’s students in basic, systematic and scientific research, contributing to the ever-evolving science of Chemistry
  2. To prepare competent scientists that will fill positions both in the Public and Private Sectors, which are directly related to industrial production, research and the dissemination of knowledge (education sector).
  3. To conduct ongoing research to ensure the collaboration between the Chemistry Department’s laboratories and laboratories and Clinics of the University of Athens and other Universities.

Duration of Studies

The minimum period for the conferment of the Master’s Degree is defined as three (3) academic semesters for the specializations 3, 8 and 9 of Article 3 or four academic semesters (4) for the other specializations and is not subject to a requirement of acquisition or professional rights.

The maximum number of students admitted to the program is seventy (70).

Faculty members of the Chemistry Department and other Departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as Faculty from other University Departments in Greece and recognized universities abroad participate in the above Postgraduate Programs. In addition, teaching staff from the categories as provided in Article 5 of the law 3685/2008 (FEK 148/ Α΄) can also be employed in the Postgraduate Programs.

 

Logistics infrastructure

The existing logistic infrastructure of the Department and of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens as well as the University of Sciences Library will be used for the operation of the Postgraduate Studies Program.

 

Duration

The Master’s Degree Program is approved to operate until the 2020-2021 academic year, when the possibility of continuing its operation will be assessed, according to the provisions of paragraph (11a) of article 80 of Law 4009/2011 (Government Gazette 195 A) as has been amended and applies.

 

2. MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM IN “POLYMER SCIENCE AND ITS APPLICATIONS”

The Department of Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will offer a reformed Master’s Degree Program in “Polymer Science and its Applications”, starting from the 2014-2015 academic year, according to the Law 3685/2008, FEK 148 Α΄/16.7.2008.

 

 Objective-Purpose

The subject of the program is the cognitive area of polymers and its applications in modern technology.

The purpose of the program is:

a) To provide postgraduate students with basic, systematic and scientific research, which contributes to the constantly evolving science of Chemistry

b) Creating skilled scientists that will empower the plastics industry, which holds a leading position in the Hellenic chemical industry and plays a major role in the national economy.

 

Master’s Degree

The Postgraduate Studies Program awards the following degree:

Master’s Degree in “Polymer Science and Its Applications”.

 

Bachelor’s Degrees Accepted

Graduates of relevant University and Technological Educational Institute Departments in Greece and abroad are accepted in the Postgraduate Program.

3. MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM IN “CATALYSIS AND ITS APPLICATIONS IN INDUSTRY”

 

The Department of Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will offer a reformed Master’s Degree Prom in “Catalysis and its Applications in Industry”, starting from the 2014-2015 academic year, according to the Law 3685/2008, FEK 148 Α΄/16.7.2008.

 

 Objective-Purpose

a) To provide Master’s students with basic, systematic and applied research throughout the field of catalysis – heterogeneous, homogeneous and enzymatic – by combining the field of applied catalysis – chemical mechanics of reactions, namely the development of a catalytic system from the molecular level to the pilot and industrial production scales, thereby contributing to the ever-evolving science of Chemistry.

(b) The creation of skilled and skilled scientists for higher education and the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and environmental protection industry as well as in  the field of air pollution control emissions from automobiles and industrial complexes.

c) Strengthening the relationships between scientists working in Greek universities and research institutes and industry.

 

Master’s Degree

4. MASTER’S PROGRAM IN “CHEMISTRY EDUCATION AND NEW EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES”  

 The following Departments:

a) Chemistry, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

b) Chemistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

c) Chemical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens

will offer the Master’s Degree Program. The administration of the Program will be carried out by the Chemistry Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

 Objective-Purpose

To provide Master’s students with knowledge necessary for the teaching of Chemistry, acquainting students with the principles, methodologies and practices for the environment and Sustainable Development and their training in the operation and use of conventional educational tools and new educational technologies as well as and tools for developing educational material.

The objectives of the Master’s Degree Program are:

(a) To improve and modernize chemical education at all levels and specialize new staff in education, environment and sustainable development.

(b) The postgraduate training of teaching staff in Chemistry, new educational technologies and their application to chemical education.

(c) The development of research in the fields of Teaching of Chemistry, Environmental Education and Sustainable Development and Implementation of Information and Communication Technologies in Education and Development of Educational Material and Software.

 

Master’s Degree

The postgraduate program awards Master’s Degrees in Chemistry Education and New Educational Technologies in the following concentrations:

5. MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM IN “CHEMICAL ANALYSIS – QUALITY CONTROL

The following Departments:

2) Chemistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki will offer the Bi-Institutional Master’s Degree Program.

The Program will be administered by the Chemistry Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Law 3685/2008.

 

 Objective-Purpose

The subject of the program is the cognitive area of modern chemical analysis, quality assurance systems and quality control of medicines, food, materials and the environment.

The purpose of the program is:

To provide Master’s students with specialized knowledge in modern chemical analysis techniques and their applications in the quality control of medicines, food, materials and environment.
To train Master’s students in quality assurance systems.
To create skilled human resources to staff the quality control laboratories in chemical industries (medicines, food, materials) as well as public and private environmental and product control laboratories

 

Master’s Degree

The Postgraduate Program awards a Master’s Degree in “Chemical Analysis – Quality Control”. The degrees are awarded by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens with the names of the Associate Departments of the Higher Education Institutions in the awarded titles. This specialization, in matters of professional rights and competitions, is equivalent to the specialization of “Analytical Chemistry”.

 

Bachelor’s Degrees Accepted

Graduates of relevant University and Technological Educational Institute Departments in Greece and abroad are accepted in the Postgraduate Program.

Students will be selected according to Article 4 of the Law 3685/08.

 

Duration

The duration of the program leading to the conferment of the Master’s Degree is four (4) academic semesters.

In addition, teaching staff from the categories as provided in Article 5 of the law 3685/2008 (FEK 148/ Α΄) can also be employed in the Postgraduate Program.

 

Logistics infrastructure

For the smooth operation of the program, the teaching areas and libraries of the participating departments will be available. In addition, modern analytical equipment will be available for the program’s needs, and specialized equipment can be accessed in collaborating external research laboratories.

 

Duration

The Master’s Degree Program has been approved to continue until the 2022-2023 academic year according to paragraph 11a, Article 80 of the Law 4009/2011 (FEK 195/A’).
Up to and including the 2014-2015 academic year, Master’s Degree students will complete their studies according to the decision 103167/Β7/19-11-2003 (FEK 1694 Β’).

 

 

6. MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM IN “ORGANIC SYNTHESIS AND ITS APPLICATION IN THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY”

From the 2015-2016 academic year, the Departments of 1) Chemistry, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and 2) Food Science and Human Nutrition, Agricultural University of Athens will offer the new Bi-Institutional Master’s Degree Program, according to the Law 3685/2008 (FEK 148 Α΄/16.7.2008).
The administration of the Program will be carried out by the Chemistry Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

 

Objective – Purpose

The subject of the Postgraduate Studies Program is “Organic Synthesis and Applications in Chemical Industry”. The purpose is to train high level (theoretical and laboratory) specialists in the synthesis of chemicals, especially of high value. These scientists will be capable of staffing the chemical industry, including the pharmaceutical industry, and contributing to its development, as well as developing strategic sectors of Universities, Research Centers, ultimately contributing significantly to the overall development needs of country and of the European Union.

The Postgraduate Studies Program awards Master’s Degrees in “Organic Synthesis and its Applications in the Chemical Industry”.

Faculty members of the collaborating Departments as well as faculty members from other University Departments in Greece and from recognized Universities abroad participate in this Master’s Degree program. In addition, teaching staff from the categories as provided in Article 5 of the law 3685/2008 (FEK 148/ Α΄) can also be employed in the Postgraduate Program.

 

Logistics infrastructure

For the smooth operation of the program, the teaching areas and libraries of the participating departments will be available. In addition, modern analytical equipment will be available for the program’s needs, and specialized equipment can be accessed in collaborating external research laboratories.

 

Duration

The Master’s Degree Program has been approved to continue until the 2022-2023 academic year according to paragraph 11a, Article 80 of the Law 4009/2011 (FEK 195/A’).

 

 

7. MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM IN “INORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND ITS APPLICATIONS IN INDUSTRY”

 

From the 2016-2017 academic year, the Department of Chemistry, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will offer the Master’s Degree Program, according to the Law 3685/2008 (FEK 148).

The administration of the Program will be carried out by the Chemistry Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

In order to attract foreign students into the Program, the Program courses will be taught in Greek and/or English

 

Objective-Purpose

The objective of the Master’s Degree Program in “Inorganic Chemistry and its Applications in Industry” is the development of postgraduate studies and high level research in the cutting edge field of Inorganic Chemistry and its applications in Industry. Inorganic Chemistry deals with the study of the role played by various metal ions and other minerals in materials, energy, biological systems and life. It has many applications including the composition of porous materials for the storage of gases, the synthesis of catalysts useful in the energy industry (conventional and renewable), the synthesis of substances with high added value, the development of innovative fertilizers and inorganic preparations, the development of zeolites, gels and aerosols, the development of minerals based on metal, the development of biocatalysts and biocatalysis, the development of diagnostics for the early diagnosis of cancer and other diseases, etc. The list is inexhaustible, and in all these references the role of the metal product and methods of synthesis and analysis of these products is central. The success of the project objectives is based on a) the coordinated efforts of teaching and research of specialists in the subject of faculty members, b) the attraction of excellent students from all over Greece and abroad, and c) the creation of the appropriate laboratory and research infrastructure and tradition in Greece, with cutting edge inorganic chemistry and its applications in industry.

 

In particular, the Program aims:

 

To exploit the Greek scientific potential of the Departments and Research Institutes specialized in the interdisciplinary cognitive area of ​​the Program.

    To achieve more effective interaction of cognitive domains and laboratory techniques with the aim of the integrated education of young scientists and their use in development areas of the National Economy, such as the staffing of public and private service providers (e.g. Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries, Laboratories and Hospital Clinics , Energy Production Industry, etc.)

    To facilitate the assessment of the Program by an independent evaluation body and its recognition at international level in the applications of Chemistry in Modern Technology.

 

The purpose of the program is:

  1. a) To provide knowledge to Master’s students in systematic and scientific research that contributes to the continuously evolving science of chemistry and to the application of its results at the industrial level.
  2. b) To create highly skilled researchers who fill positions in the public and private sectors, which are directly related to industrial production, research and the dissemination of knowledge (education sector).

 

Master’s Degree

The Postgraduate Studies Program awards Master’s Degrees in “Inorganic Chemistry and its Application in Industry”. The Degree is awarded by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

 

Bachelor’s Degrees Accepted

Graduates of relevant University and Technological Educational Institute Departments in Greece and of recognized Institutions abroad are accepted in the Postgraduate Program.
Students will be selected according to Article 4 of the Law 3685/08.

The program combines postgraduate courses and practical experience in both basic and lab-industrial research. The courses, teaching and research employment, workshops and any other type of educational and research activities for the award of the Master’s degree are defined as follows :

For the award of the MME obligatory attendance and successful examination is required in 6 theoretical and laboratory courses of the 1st and 2nd Semesters.

The diploma thesis is carried out in the 3rd semester of studies and is credited with 30 ECTS. The sum of the ECTS required for the award of the Master amounts to ninety (90). Internships are possible during the summer months. The lessons will be in Greek and / or English. In detail, courses and workshops are distributed as follows:

Any issues not covered by this document will be regulated in accordance with the provisions of the Postgraduate Studies Program of the Department of Chemistry and the relevant bodies in accordance with the applicable legislation.

 

 

8. MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM IN “CHEMISTRY – PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY”

 

From the 2016-2017 academic year, the Department of Chemistry, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will offer the Master’s Degree Program, according to the Law 3685/2008 (FEK 148).

The administration of the Program will be carried out by the Chemistry Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

 

 Objective-Purpose

The objective of Master’s Degree Program in “Chemistry-Physical Chemistry ” is the high level experimental and theoretical basic research in the science of Chemistry and Physical Chemistry and its application in the cutting edge area of computing applications in Chemical Technology-Industry. Physical Chemistry studies the properties of matter both macroscopically and at the molecular level and reproduces, through physical theories, the behavior of chemical compounds. In addition to the experimental study of the spectroscopic, thermodynamic and kinetic properties of reactive chemical systems, natural theories are developed to interpret microscopic and macroscopic behavior of matter. In addition, the development of computers has made it possible to predict physicochemical properties and processes in industrial applications through the computational techniques and methods of molecular simulations of chemical systems. Simulations, as computer experiments, can be performed at major Hyper-Computing Centers in the Country, the European Union, as well as other countries such as the USA.

Program goals:

a) The transfer of knowledge from basic research to both experimental and theoretical applications. In particular, it is of interest to develop computing techniques and to apply their use in Industry (Design and Optimization of Chemical Derivatives).

b) Collaboration with researchers in areas where Chemistry is applied, such as Biochemistry, Biology, Pharmacology, Mechanics, etc. with the aim of benefiting synergy in the development of the respective sectors of the National Economy.

The program aims to:

a) Use and develop techniques (Thermodynamic, Spectroscopic) of experimental study of chemical systems as well as theoretical and computational methods for the interpretation of the behavior of matter, with emphasis on Chemical applications in general,

b) Train new researchers – executives able to design the molecular simulation of physicochemical properties and processes, using computers, which are useful in the development of industrial products.

 

Master’s Degree

For the award of the Master’s Degree, compulsory attendance and successful examination is required in 3 theoretical – laboratory courses of the first semester and 3 theoretical – laboratory courses of the 2nd semester. In the third semester of study, training in the Research Methodology & Laboratory Practice in the field of Physical Chemistry is carried out, as well as collection of bibliographic data regarding the research field of diploma thesis and is credited with 30 ECTS. The diploma thesis is carried out in the 4th semester of studies and is credited with 30 ECTS. The sum of the ECTS required for the award of the Master they amount to one hundred and twenty (120).
